but was then posted to the command of the District of Nashville

This missing half is represented in my auction photo as the black rectangle

Pretty uncommon to find a CDV image of just a machine, like this. On the back is the imprint for Adams' Gallery in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dimension are 4" x 2. 5".
