The base is carved with the words "Never Forget" in French (n'oublie jamais), and there's a glass locket inside with an intricately woven lock of hair indicating it's status as a memorial piece. The top of the base is fluted, and the frame modelled as two loops of rope; all crafted in 15 karat gold.
